Journalism students with instructor in the newsroom

The history and the success of the Valley Star runs deep. Due to The Star’s dedicated students and instructors, its list of accomplishments would be too long to list. In years past, The Star became the only newspaper in the Los Angeles Community College District to be recognized by the Board of Trustees. The Los Angeles Times called the campus publication as one of the top papers in the area. It has won several General Excellence Awards and twice won a Pacesetter award. The Journalism Association of Community Colleges only gives the Pacesetter award to the top 5 percent of community college newspapers in the state. More recently, in 2022, the Los Angeles Press Club named  as a finalist for the "Best College Newspaper" in Southern California. The Star, which won the award in 2021, competes against four-year colleges and other community colleges. The Valley Star has built a great reputation for turning out writers, and some of our students are now writing professionally for The Los Angeles Times, The Riverside Press Enterprise, The Orange County Register, Sports Illustrated and the San Fernando Valley Sun. One of our former students is writing freelance stories for Scientific American. We enjoy the support of the campus administration and the staff, and we hope to continue the tradition of training new reporters and publishing the award-winning Valley Star.
